Winterizing Your Boat

Updated: Dec 14, 2023

Winterizing your boat is essential to protect it from the harsh conditions of winter, especially if you live in an area where temperatures drop below freezing. Proper winterization helps prevent damage to the engine, plumbing, and other components of your boat. Here's a general guide on how to winterize your boat:

Always follow your manufacture's recommendation’s....

Here is a general guideline.

1. Engine and Fuel System:

- Change the engine oil and oil filter.

- Add fuel stabilizer to the fuel tank and run the engine to ensure the stabilizer circulates through the entire fuel system.

On my Mercury, it's recommended that I add fuel treatment to every fill-up.

This what I use.

This will keep fuel good for three months. Enough to get through the winter months.

2. Cooling System:

- If your boat has a raw water cooling system, flush it with fresh water to remove any salt or debris.

- Drain the cooling system or fill it with antifreeze to prevent freezing.

3. Bilge and Plumbing:

- Pump out any standing water from the bilge.

- Empty and clean the bilge pump strainer.

- Disconnect and drain water hoses to prevent freezing.

4. Trailer:

   - It's a good idea to inspect the wheel bearings once a year.

   - Remove old greese and re-pack with new.

5. Battery:

- Remove the boat battery and store it in a cool, dry place.

- If you leave the battery on the boat, disconnect it to prevent any parasitic loads.

6. Interior and Exterior:

- Clean and wax the boat's exterior to protect the finish.

- Remove any valuables, electronics, and cushions from the interior to prevent theft and damage.

- Open hatches to promote ventilation and prevent mold and mildew.

7. Covering and Storage:

- Cover the boat with a proper boat cover to protect it from the elements.

- If possible, store the boat indoors. If not, choose a location that provides protection from wind, snow, and ice.

8. Inspect and Repair:

- Inspect the boat for any signs of wear or damage and make necessary repairs before storing it for the winter.

9. Documentation:

- Keep a checklist of the winterization process for reference in the spring.

It's important to note that the specific steps for winterizing your boat may vary based on the type and model of your boat, as well as the climate of your location. Always refer to your boat's owner's manual for manufacturer-specific guidelines. Additionally, consider seeking professional assistance if you are unsure about any aspect of the winterization process.
