Updated: Aug 25, 2023

North Carolina, a state known for its stunning coastline, picturesque lakes, and abundant waterways, offers a plethora of fishing opportunities for anglers of all levels. Among the diverse range of species that attract fishing enthusiasts, the white perch stands out as a popular target for its thrilling fight and delectable taste. In this article, we delve into the world of white perch fishing in North Carolina, exploring the best techniques, prime locations, and the unique experience it offers.

The White Perch: A Fascinating Catch

The white perch (Morone americana) is a freshwater fish species that thrives in the water bodies of North Carolina. Often mistaken for its close relative, the striped bass, white perch boast a distinctive silvery-white appearance with a hint of emerald hue. With an average length of 6-10 inches and a weight of about half a pound, white perch offer an exciting challenge for anglers seeking a rewarding catch.

Prime Fishing Techniques

Bait Selection: White perch are opportunistic feeders and will eagerly strike a variety of baits. Artificial lures such as small jigs, spoons, and spinners can entice these fish. I catch many by just trolling a small swim bait as I’m kayaking to my next area of the lake.

My Top Fishing Locations

1. Falls Lake: Just north of Raleigh, Falls Lake boasts a healthy white perch population. The lake's numerous coves and points make it an excellent destination for anglers.

2. Kerr Lake: also known as Buggs Island Lake, is a reservoir situated along the border of North Carolina and Virginia in the United States. It is created by the John H. Kerr Dam on the Roanoke River. The lake is named after Congressman John H. Kerr, who played a significant role in the development of the area.

3. Mayo Lake: This is another reservoir located in North Carolina, USA. It is situated in Person County, near the town of Roxboro.

Culinary Delight or as they say in the south “Good Eat’n”

White perch are not only a thrill to catch but also a culinary delight. Their tender, flaky flesh and mild flavor make them a versatile ingredient in various dishes. Whether pan-fried, grilled, or baked, white perch can be enjoyed with a variety of seasonings and accompaniments.

White perch fishing in North Carolina combines the joys of angling with the thrill of a successful catch and the satisfaction of a delicious meal. When the Bass aren’t biting, you typically can catch white perch, especially in the hotter months.
